Faith in humanity

As I sit and discuss issues with my clients, I often marvel.

Often I will hear clients articulate their thoughts and experiences so well, so thoughtfully, before I’ve made any contribution. The care that they put into their words is truly beautiful to observe. It’s always evident when a client has done their “homework” outside of session, where they’ve continued to mull things over, simmering on their issues until they begin to reach clarity.

I get to see clients give grace where they’ve been slighted, accept correction and instruction, and choose to see the best in people, all without prompting from me. I also see them persevere after a season of stumbling around in the dark. I get to see the resilience of the human spirit every day, the fight and tenacity to survive, to grow, to flourish.

I can’t say that my faith in humanity is “restored” because, despite the brokenness of the world, I have never lost faith. People are too complex, too capable for me to lose hope, and I see the evidence every time I go to work. The image of the Living God shines bright among creation, and they are truly a sight to behold.
